Bloomingto(w)n -- Spring 2004 (March-April 2004)
[ Progression from being a dead place to one which is full of life! ] |
- It has been been a beautiful spring this time around in B'town. It's been a lot warmer for the best part. The transition has been absolutely awesome! I've been able to see the place coming back to life; that's what I've tried to capture in these pictures, hope I've done a decent job :-).
- I've been taking pictures in Griffy Lake (which is about 3 miles from where I live), Bryan Park (a 10 min walk from where I live, an awesome place) and various streets, etc. Pretty much, the whole place has been looking pretty!
- As the title suggests, these pictures are taken on various days -- starting Mid-March through Mid-April; dates are mentioned below at certain points. One of the many advantages of walking/biking to work instead of driving!

March 13 2004
Serene bluesy day; B'town still partially dead. Griffy lake was still devoid of much vegetation. Managed one of my favorite Sun shots.
Bryan Park (second row) was much greener as the macro-mode snap of fresh grass shows.
March 25-26 2004
Around the School of Informatics, overlooking the beautiful Woodlawn Field (one of the most beautiful places in B'town especially looking east from Woodlawn).
Once again, I love that closeup shot of Redbuds (2119) as well as the close-up picture of tiny new leaves sprouting out (2125)! |
Notice what a difference, one day can make especially if it rains a bit. The last 2 snaps are again around the Informatics building but much greener!
(2117 and 2131 are essentially the same location, differenly focussed)
March 27 2004
Bryan Park and park area behind the Indiana Memorial Union (IMU).
March 30 2004
Close to downtown where they have the Dogwood (white) and Redbud (red) trees lined up on the two sides. It's an awesome sight! Isn't the closeup of Dogwoods wonderful?

April 02 2004
First Row: Near Sample Gates (*downtown*, albeit a tiny one!) and going south on Indiana near the Law school.
Second Row: Don't the second and third picture look a bit artisitic? (~ sigh ~ self praise...)
Third Row: Atwater curve on third street and S.Dunn.
Fourth Row: The park area behind IMU. Once again, the first picture, isn't it cool?
Fifth Row: Going across the park area behind IMU towards Informatics. Down Woodlawn North, the colors were really nice that day.
And last but not the least, (the) 'one of the best' sights I was talking about previously -- looking east across the Woodlawn field.

April 03-06 2004
A quick visit to Griffy lake to check if it has changed.. Not much, I guess... The Canada Geese were out though, enjoying themselves in the warm sunshine!
Interesting note about them at the end of this page.
But the area around IMU was looking good as ever (6th April) as was the area surrounding Wrubel Computing Center (where I work with the RATS folks on Teragrid)
April 08 2004
The crazy Atwater curve where people drive as though they are on a F1 race.
And the surrounding area -- third street and S.Henderson leading to Indiana Ave.
April 10 2004
Almost the end of spring and beginning of summer. But I got one last view of some nice spring colors down Indiana and on seventh street near the IMU.
April 15 2004
Yeah, almost the end of spring as I mentioned previously, but still there were exceptions.
The following bunch of snaps range from the AtWater curve (race track!) through upto S Henderson and then Henderson leading down to Indiana Ave. And one snap of beautiful Tulips.
But it should be fairly clear, what I meant by "almost end of spring".
Notice in 2209 and its closeup 2211, the colorful flowery thingies disappearing and the corresponding appearence of green leaves. The transition is almost complete.
Also, notice the difference between 2144 and 2224 -- basically the same place but the colors have changed from red & white to almost brown & green+white.
(Actually they've turned green now -- April 24).

The birds identified as ducks at Griffy are actually Canada geese. They're
quite common around here, have a fantastic honk, and leave an awful mess
whenever they come out of the water on land. Sometimes you'll see a
flock flying over WCC in a "V" formation (and you'll hear them first).
Very cool.
Thanks to Matt Allen who gave me some Biology lessons on the little flowery things [Dogwoods and Redbuds] as well as the ducks [Canada Geese -- See note above] :-)
Could not get any shots of Magnolia this year. By the time, I figured where to go looking for them [thanks to George Turner], spring's over. Next year...
